Communities are infrastructure. The systems supporting them are not.
The Value
Technical communities and third-sector organisations move knowledge, build careers, and reach the people public services and markets miss. They generate substantial economic and social value.

Yet the systems they depend on are fragile by default. Organisers run critical communities on fragmented tooling. When a platform shifts terms or a volunteer steps back, the community absorbs the loss.

Community Stack is a stewardship-led community infrastructure group founded in Barnsley by Ethan Sumner. The company builds, operates, and stewards the infrastructure communities rely on across technology, civic life, and the third sector. Its work spans five connected pillars: Ecosystem, Engine, Junction, Switchboard, and Labs. Community Stack operates practitioner communities and conferences across AI, cloud, DevOps, platform engineering, and finance technology; builds open source software for community operations; gives third-sector organisations a credible accessible digital presence through Switchboard; and researches the next generation of community infrastructure through Labs. How We Operate
Operating Principles
Infrastructure first.
We build for durability, not hype. The short term pressures of events, growth, and revenue are real — but they never override the long-term requirement to build things that last.
Stewardship before scale.
Growth matters. Trust matters more. We will not take on communities we cannot properly support, or grow faster than our operating model can sustain.
Communities first, always.
We do not sell individual member data, run pay to play speaking slots, or accept sponsorship that buys editorial control. It costs us money. It is why the rooms are worth being in.
Free where it matters, paid where it can be.
There will never be a paywall between a small organisation and a basic digital presence. The civic tier is free because the mission requires it.
Accessibility by default.
Accessibility is part of the infrastructure, not an enhancement, and never something we withhold at any price. It is designed in from the start, not added later.
Open where possible.
Engine's core is open source and stays that way. We do not use licensing to trap organisations that cannot afford to leave.
Local agency, shared standards.
Each community keeps its identity, its name, its organiser, and its culture while benefiting from shared infrastructure, commercial relationships, and operational support.
Reinvestment over extraction.
Revenue improves quality, governance, technology, accessibility and resilience before it does anything else.
Impact over activity.
We measure outcomes, not activity for its own sake. A smaller, healthier, better-supported community is a better result than a larger, fragile one.
Trust by design.
We are clear about who runs communities, how decisions are made, where the value goes, and what we will not do. Transparency is not a communications strategy — it is an operating requirement.

Founder & CEO, Community Stack
Ethan Sumner is the Founder and CEO of Community Stack, a stewardship-led community infrastructure group founded in Barnsley. He leads Community Stack's ecosystem strategy, commercial growth, partnerships, conferences, acquisitions, and long-term infrastructure vision. His work focuses on treating communities as serious social infrastructure, not informal side projects or one-off events.
He has built and operated practitioner communities across cloud, DevOps, platform engineering, AI, data, and technology leadership, and has run more than 125 events. His background includes work with Microsoft, Mastercard, Barclays, and leading consultancies.
